Hi ✌️,
And welcome back to this weeks edition of INFUZED on people.
The most complex part of any company or project is its people.
We don’t get an error message when we’re committing a typo in our approach. The effects of our interactions only become apparent over time. With every interaction we influence the development of the other person.
When you are the leader or manager it’s a large part of your job to develop people.
"3 mistakes to avoid when developing people"
Mistake #1: Fix it for them
If someone comes to you with a problem, don’t fix it for them.
This leads to two bad outcomes for them. Number one, you rob them of a chance to learn something. Number two, you teach them come to you anytime they face a difficulty.
Mistake #2: Tell them what you want them to do
If someone asks you for help, don’t tell them the solution and explain how they can get it done.
This will lead to the development of a good soldier or sheep, who will continuously wait for you to tell them what to do. The result is zero growth.
Mistake #3: Teach what you would do
If someone asks you for advice, don’t tell them what you would do if you’d be in their shoes.
While this appears to be a good thing to do, you’re the leader and role model after all, this approach fails to develop the person. It fails to prepare the person for the next situation.
What to focus on instead: It all basically comes down to coaching people how to think and not what to think.
All three approaches above fail to teach someone how to think.
Teaching the person in development how to think instead of what to think makes all the difference. This is what enables them to solve new problems, build upon their personal foundation, and develop into the person they have the potential to be.
Let's help everyone around us to develop into their full potential.
Best,
