Hi everyone✌️,
Welcome to the last issue of INFUZED in 2021. What a year it has been!
While this issue is neither another reflection on the year, nor entails any resolutions for the new year, I believe it to be a well-suited lens through which one may reflect upon one’s development in learning and leadership.
Let’s dive right in:
"The 4 Stages of Leadership"
I do... You watch.
I do... You help.
You do... I help.
You do... I watch.
Simple, but foundational. There is no pervasive mastering of any capability without going through all four stages.
If you’re leading someone, you need to make sure to go through all stages with them.
If you skip one, your follower won’t be able to complete the development and you’ll continue to be stuck with doing the work yourself or grow frustrated at why they’re not getting it.
If you don’t complete all four stages, same result: You’ll get stuck at that step and repeat the same things over and over again.
Two additional ideas I want to put out there:
The first: see how leadership is about the transfer of responsibility? First you need to do it yourself, but in the end, you’ll be able to watch. One of my favourite definitions of leadership relates closely to this: „Leadership is working yourself out of a job.“
The second: Learning consists of two phases, teaching & practice. You can’t stop after the teaching and don’t put the learned into practice, yet still expecting to become a master at something.
This second idea brings us back to my initial claim of how this concept of the four stages of leadership may help us to reflect on the development of our learning and leadership in 2021. It also applies to our own learning, not only to the things we want to teach others. We need to go through the same stages if we want to learn to do something well.
